Ajalugu ja müstika. Ladina-Ameerika kunst ja Euroopa

Raamat kaasneb näitustega „Ajalugu ja müstika. Ladina-Ameerika kunst ja Euroopa“ ja „Leonora Carrington“ Kumu kunstimuuseumis (21.06.–03.11.2024).

Euroopa ja Ameerika kultuurimällu on pikalt kuulunud teadmine, et Christoph Kolumbus „avastas uue maailma“ 1492. aastal. Täna on eurooplaste vallutuslugu Ameerika mandril kuumade arutelude teemaks, Kolumbuse kujud langevad ning koloniaalperioodi kunst, aga ka Ladina-Ameerika ajalugu laiemalt, annab võimalusi uuteks tõlgendusteks ja näitusteks. Eestis näeb Ladina-Ameerika kunstipärandit nii suures mahus esimest korda. Võimaluse selleks on loonud koostöö Antwerpenis tegutseva The Phoebus Foundationiga, millele kuulub üks suuremaid Ladina-Ameerika kunsti kollektsioone Euroopas. The Phoebus Foundationi kogude põhjal on näitusele ja käesolevasse raamatusse valitud kunsti kahest eri ajastust: vanad ja väärtuslikud maalid 17.–19. sajandist, Hispaania koloniaalvõimu ajast, ning 20. sajandi Argentina, Colombia, Kuuba, Mehhiko, Tšiili, Uruguay ja Venezuela modernistlike kunstnike tööd. Omaette alateema on väike valik suure osa elust Mehhikos veetnud briti päritolu sürrealistliku kunstniku ja kirjaniku Leonora Carringtoni (1917–2011) töödest.

History and Mystery: Latin American Art and Europe

The book accompanies the exhibitions History and Mystery: Latin American Art and Europe and Leonora Carrington at the Kumu Art Museum (21.06.–03.11.2024).

Christopher Columbus’s “discovery of the New World” in 1492 has long been part of European and American cultural memory. Today, the European conquest of the Americas is the subject of heated debate, monuments to Columbus are being removed, and the art of the colonial period, as well as Latin American history in general, are open to new interpretations. This is the first time that Latin American art has been exhibited on such a large scale in Estonia. This has been made possible through collaboration with The Phoebus Foundation in Antwerp, which owns one of the largest collections of Latin American art in Europe. Drawing on the collections of The Phoebus Foundation, the exhibition and this book feature art from two eras: the historic masterpieces from the Spanish colonial period from the 17th to the 19th century, and modernist art from the independent Latin American countries of the 20th century, with a focus on Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Chile, Uruguay and Venezuela. As part of the project, specially selected works by Leonora Carrington (1917‒2011), a British-born surrealist artist and writer who spent much of her life in Mexico, are also presented at the exhibition and in this book.
